If you or a loved one have been charged with a crime, having the right criminal defense attorney makes all the difference in the outcome of your case. Selecting the best lawyer to represent you requires research and asking the right questions to find an attorney who fits your needs.

    Ask for recommendations

Best way to find a good criminal defense lawyer is to ask people you trust for recommendations. Friends, family members, and colleagues who’ve been through a criminal case suggest lawyers they or people they know have used and provide feedback on their experience. You also check with local bar associations, court clerks, or public defenders for names of criminal defense attorneys with strong reputations.

    Research experience and credentials

Once you have some referrals, do your research. Check each lawyer’s background, credentials, experience, and client reviews.

    • Have ample experience facing criminal charges in Oakland. You want someone well-versed in defending cases like yours.
    • Are licensed in your state. Ensure they have passed the bar and are authorized to practice in the relevant jurisdiction.
    • Have earned certifications in criminal law from the National Board of Trial Advocacy or the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. These demonstrate the lawyer’s specialized knowledge in this field.
    • Went to a reputable law school and did well academically. Top-tier law schools provide rigorous training.
    • Have a record of success handling cases similar to yours. Look up their case results and client reviews.
    • Keep yourself informed about updates in criminal law. Ongoing education and training is a must.

    Evaluate their strategy and compatibility

Schedule initial consultations with lawyers who meet your criteria to assess if you’ll work well together.

    • What defense strategies do you use in cases like mine? Look for a proactive, strategic approach versus just waiting to respond to the prosecution’s moves.
    • What percentage of your caseload is devoted to criminal defense? You want this to be their main focus and area of expertise.
    • How and how often will you communicate with me? Make sure you’re comfortable with their communication style.
    • Who handles tasks like research and paperwork? Some duties are delegated to legal assistants or junior attorneys.
    • What are my options if I’m not satisfied with your services? There should be a clear process if you need to change course.

Get fee and payment details upfront

Defense lawyers have various fee structures – flat fees, hourly billing, payment plans, etc. Get all financial terms in writing before officially retaining a lawyer so there are no surprises.

    • What are your upfront retainer and total fee estimates? Account for all potential court and trial costs.
    • How do you bill – hourly, flat fee, payment plan? What gets billed and when? Know the payment expectations.
    • What expenses aren’t included like hiring experts or investigators? Factor in any additional costs.
    • Can any part of the fee be refunded if the trial is canceled? This provides flexibility if you change course.
    • Are there payment plans or financing options? In case the overall expense is more than you pay at once.

Visiting local court sessions to see prospective Oakland Criminal Defense Attorney in action also helps you evaluate their courtroom demeanor and interactions with prosecutors, judges, and other lawyers.
